Big Isle affray, shooting leave 3 hurt, 1 critically

Three males were injured in an apparent shooting that occurred at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Puna.

Just after 6:20 p.m. Sunday, police said a confrontation occurred between two groups of people at the Pohoiki Boat Ramp at the beach park.

Preliminary estimates indicate about 15 to 30 people were involved in the fight. “We’re trying to sort through this,” said Maj. Sam Thomas of the Hawaii County Police Department.

Multiple gunshots were fired during the altercation at which time three men sustained gunshot wounds.

One of the three victims, a 35-year-0ld Pahoa man, was transported to Hilo Medical Center and then flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.

The two other victims, ages 25 and 27, both of Mountain View, were taken to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition.

Police said a 49-year-old Mountain View man who allegedly shot the 35-year-old man fled the scene in a vehicle after the shooting.

Police arrested the suspect at the intersection of Highway 132 and Pohoiki Road shortly afterward on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police closed the intersection just past Lava Tree Park Sunday night to investigate.
