A man who jumped off a Laie Point cliff into the water below Saturday was transported to an emergency room in critical condition.
The city’s Ocean Safety services, fire department and Emergency Medical Services responded to a distress call at 12:50 p.m.
According to witnesses, the man jumped off the point and was unable to make it back up the cliff, said EMS/Ocean Safety spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
“We were told that he did make it back up to a ledge, but was knocked off by a wave. He was found in the water unresponsive,” Enright said.
Enright said firefighters went down the cliffside, while lifeguards responded by rescue watercraft. The conditions were 6- to 10-foot faces with wind.
The man was brought to shore, where rescuers performed CPR until paramedics took over treatment and transported him to a hospital.
The area was featured as a jumping point in the 2008 movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” but Enright said Ocean Safety strongly advises against the practice, especially in remote areas where there are no lifeguards.
“You can jump so quickly, and by the time help gets to you it’s too late,” she said.
Work furlough escapee apprehended
Police arrested a 36-year-old man Friday who had escaped from Laumaka Work Furlough Center, which is operated by the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
The facility reported Martin Williams as an escapee at 4:30 p.m. July 9 when he failed to return from work furlough.
The Honolulu Police Department said that he was taken into custody without incident at 11:21 p.m. Friday at 1104 Palama St. Police said charges are pending.
According to a state Department of Public Safety news release, Williams was serving time for promoting a dangerous drug.
The department said Williams was a community custody inmate, the lowest classification status, in the work furlough program with pass privileges.
