Arson suspected in Ewa Beach home fire

Police have initiated an arson investigation in connection with a two-alarm fire that damaged a home in Ewa Beach.

Shortly after 10:20 p.m. Monday, nine units with 31 firefighters responded to the fire at 91-214 Makalea St. When they arrived, firefighters observed smoke emanating from the structure, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.

When they entered the home, they discovered a fire in the master bedroom. Firefighters brought the fire under control at 10:56 p.m. and extinguished it at 11:08 p.m.

No one was home at the time.

Jenkins said Honolulu fire investigators were at the scene Tuesday. The cause of the fire and a damage estimate have yet to be determined.

According to a preliminary police investigation, an unknown male entered the home sometime between 8:16 and 8:29 p.m. and started a fire before he fled.

The man was wearing a dark-colored ski mask, light-colored jacket and pants, and slippers at the time of the fire.

Boy injured after being hit by car at library

An 8-year-old boy was in serious condition Tuesday after being run over by a vehicle in the Waialua Library parking lot, authorities said.

Paramedics treated the boy and transported him by ambulance to an emergency room, said Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright. The incident happened at about 3:11 p.m.

A library worker said based on what he’s heard, the accident was not a hit-and-run.

Man arrested in attempted Mililani break-in

Police arrested a 35-year-old man after he allegedly attempted to break into a home in Mililani.

At about 3 p.m. Monday, police said, a witness saw the suspect attempt to break into his neighbor’s home.

Police were called, and the suspect was arrested on Kealohi Street shortly after on suspicion of first-degree burglary and criminal contempt of court.
