An 18-year-old man has been charged in the carjacking of a vehicle in Kalihi.

Shayddon Lizardo-Calarruda appeared Monday in Honolulu District Court after he was charged with kidnapping and second-degree robbery. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Lizardo-Calarruda remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Just before 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at the parking lot of Marukai Wholesale Mart, 2310 Kamehameha Highway, police said, a 76-year-old man was sitting in the passenger side of his parked white Infiniti when he was confronted by the man later identified as Lizardo-Calarruda.

He entered the vehicle by the driver-side door and brandished an unknown object wrapped in a cloth, according to a court document.

Police said Lizardo-Calarruda then started the ignition while threatening the occupant and drove the vehicle toward the exit of the parking lot. The victim pleaded with the driver to let him out of the car.

Police said Lizardo-Calarruda used physical force to get him out of the vehicle before he drove off.

Police issued a bulletin, including surveillance images, and found him Friday night at a homeless camp near the Waipahu Plantation Village. After a brief struggle, officers arrested him.

Suspect charged in Waikiki hostel theft

A 21-year-old man has been charged in the theft of property from a Waikiki hostel.

Jayson Thompson appeared Monday in District Court after he was charged Friday with second-degree robbery. His preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.

Thompson is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police said a 35-year-old employee at the Beach Waikiki Boutique Hostel on Cartwright Road observed a male later identified as Thompson run away after he stole property just after 4:40 p.m. Friday.

The employee detained him but Thompson broke free. Police located him shortly afterward.

Road-rage confrontation ends with arrest

Police arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with a road-rage incident in Ewa Beach.

At about 6 p.m. Sunday, police said, the suspect and a 29-year-old man were involved in a traffic incident that escalated.

While both vehicles were at a traffic light, police said, the suspect got out of his vehicle with an unspecified dangerous instrument. He then started damaging the vehicle, occupied by the victim and his family member, a 3-year-old girl.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree criminal property damage and possession of a deadly weapon.
