Permanent shutdown of Waialua kitchen foils farmers

The commercial kitchen was established by nonprofit Friends for Waialua Town with state and federal help to foster businesses and jobs for former Waialua Sugar Co. workers when the sugar mill shut down in 1996. With her is Edith Ramiscal with some of her homemade pickles.

Two decades after Waialua Sugar Co. closed, its old mill building on Oahu’s North Shore still bustles —with small businesses such as surfboard shapers, food producers and craft makers. Read more
