A 64-year-old man who sustained critical injuries in a fire at his Volcano area home on the Big Island has died.

He has been identified as Kris Anderson.

At about 6:10 p.m. on Sept. 9, police said his children were playing with matches while under his residence, an elevated structure on Nahelenani Street, when the home caught fire.

Anderson sustained injuries when he re-entered the home to check whether any of his children were inside.

Police said he was flown in critical condition to the Straub Burn Center on Oahu where he died Thursday.

The children were uninjured.

Police said the cause of the fire was deemed accidental.
