Strong thunderstorms are clustered along Hamakua coast from Hawaiian Beach to Laupahoehoe, the National Weather Service reports. Pictured is lightning on Mauna Kea taken from Waikoloa Village.
At approximately 9:30 tonight, the National Weather Service reported strong thunderstorms on the Big Island along Kau district.
Locations impacted include Naalehu, Pahala, Wood Valley, Kawa Flats, Hawaiian Ocean View, Punaluu Beach, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Discovery Harbour, Hawaii Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit and Waiohinu.
These thunderstorms were moving west at 10 mph. Frequent cloud to ground lightning and heavy rain were also occurring.
The National Weather Service also issued a flood advisory for the island until 11 p.m.
At approximately 8 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over portions of the windward side of the Big Island from Hilo to South Point. Rainfall rates up to 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected in the heaviest showers. Periods of heavy rainfall will continue for a few more hours.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Naalehu, Paauilo, Orchidlands Estates, Pepeekeo, Keaau, Ookala, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Kawa Flats, Pahoa, Hawaiian Acres and Glenwood.
