Wailuku man dies after hit-and-run

A 54-year-old pedestrian has died in a fatal hit-and-run in Wailuku.

He has been identified as Floyd Nahinu Jr. of Wailuku.

Shortly after 7:50 p.m. Sunday, police said a white pickup truck with an extended cab was traveling north on Waialae Road when the vehicle struck a pedestrian later identified as Nahinu who was walking across the roadway.

The truck fled before police arrived.

Nahinu was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.

Police said it’s unknown whether speed, drugs or alcohol was involved. The investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui county’s 13th traffic-related fatality compared to 16 at the same time last year.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call police at 244-6400.
