The Damien Monarchs did more than stay alive.
Shelby Capllonch drilled seven of her 25 kills in the fifth set as Damien upset No. 7 Le Jardin 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 18-25, 17-15 on Tuesday night at Charles B. Wang Gymnasium.
The Monarchs (11-4) entered the match with one loss in the ILH Division II double-elimination tournament, which came at the hands of Le Jardin (12-1) last week. The teams will meet tonight at Damien’s Bishop Scanlan Gymnasium for the tournament title.
“I’m relieved, tired, but very proud of the girls. We’ve had a lot of adjustments and my hat’s off to Le Jardin,” Monarchs coach Don Faumuina said. “I told the girls above all have fun and believe in yourselves.”
Four teams from the ILH have already qualified for the D-II state tourney, but Damien played with a fury — backed by roughly 100 traveling fans — worthy of a title.
Heavenly Campbell added 14 kills and Ilana Sagapolutele added four kills and three blocks. Hali‘amaka Gora dished out 28 assists and Ashlynn Herring had 18 assists and an ace.
In all, Damien had six aces and eight service errors while Le Jardin had seven aces and 13 service errors. Capllonch was relentless.
“I guess we wanted it more. It’s the first time we’ve won round two or anything,” the junior said. “Mainly, we had the hardest time on defense so we worked hard on that.”
After the home-team Bulldogs rallied to tie the match, Damien seemed to be out of gas. Instead, the Monarchs revved up and brought the power that was dominant earlier. Damien hit .400 in the final set, adding one ace by Marissa Daligcon, and had no service errors.
Le Jardin, perhaps fatigued by the rally, committed three service errors in the final set and finished the night with an uncharacteristic 13 service errors.
“Damien played great. Shelby is a stud. We knew she’d come to play,” Le Jardin coach Lee Lamb said. “We warmed up flat. The comeback was nice, getting the match to a fifth set, but it would mean more if we’d won.”
Natalie Piper led all hitters with 30 kills, stepping up extra on a night when opposite Julia Fisher was under the weather. Fisher still played big down the stretch and finished with 15 kills and a block.
