The inaugural Pearl City Carnival, sponsored by the Pearl City Community Association, was held on the grounds of Pearl City High School and featured EK Fernandez rides, food and other activities. Pearl City High School students Alaina Mercado, left, Tehani Gano, Maili Pascua and Alia Mercado (Alaina's twin sister) rode the Seven Seas Ride on Sunday. The money raised will go to schools in the Pearl City complex.

Embassy Suites by Hilton held a grand opening ceremony Wednesday for a new hotel in Kapolei at 725 Manawai St., adding 180 rooms to Oahu's tight hotel market. A pair of Utah development firms, Western States Lodging & Management and Thackeray Garn Co. developed the roughly $60 million project. It joins the 175-room Hampton Inn & Suites, which recently opened at the Ka Makana Ali'i regional shopping center, and the Marriott Residence Inn Kapolei, which broke ground Tuesday, as new hotels in Kapolei.

Target will open its new location at Ala Moana Center today at 8 a.m. The new store, in the former Nordstrom space on Kapiolani Boulevard, will feature a CVS Pharmacy and a Starbucks inside and employ about 450 people. Target will hold a grand opening on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. with complimentary reusable bags to be distributed to the fi rst 1,000 customers. The retailer has three stores on Oahu: one near Pearl Harbor, another in Kailua and a third in Kapolei. Target Ala Moana Store Team Leader Zachary Orell showed the store's produce section Tuesday after a blessing ceremony was held at the store.

The 79-foot Pacifi c Paradise remained aground in the waters off Kaimana Beach on Sunday, making an unusual backdrop for Kaku and Kei Matsuda and their wedding party. The couple had just gotten married and paid a visit to Kaimana Beach for photos.

SlutWalk 2017 organizer Kayla Marie reacted after a sheriff told her that her attire may garner unwanted attention as a small group gathered at the state Capitol on Saturday for the event. The rally, which is part of a national movement aimed at ending so-called slutshaming of victims of sexual violence, was organized with the support of groups including Hawaii J20 and Amnesty International Hawaii Chapter.

Lightning lit up the skies over Hawaii island Thursday night as heavy rain soaked several communities. Over the 24-hour period ending at 3:45 p.m. Friday, the highest rainfall total was recorded at Papaikou Well (4.37 inches). Route 132 below the Pohoiki Road intersection was closed early Friday morning due to a downed tree and power lines. Volunteers from the American Red Cross were dispatched to Hawi, where residential fl ooding was reported.

This is Cadet Edgar Gonzalez Vela serving pastries (in the mess hall during a tour he was giving) to some of the 48 girls from St. Andrew's Schools who were at Pier 9 at Aloha Tower to greet and celebrate the arrival of the majestic Mexican Navy tall ship, ARM Cuauhtemoc, The girls performed an oli, hula and The Queens Prayer for the 234-member crew and for the victims of the earthquake, whose last stop was in Kobe, Japan. The girls were then given a tour of the ship. Sailors stood on the 125-foot-high masts as the 295-foot-long ship came in. The Cuauhtemoc, which doubles as a training vessel for 42 cadets (five of them women), is on a nine-month, 15-port world journey that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Mexican constitution.

A car fire produced a spectacular blaze tonight on Frear Street in Makiki. Honolulu firefighters said the fire was reported at 6:36 p.m. and extinguished by 6:53 p.m. The fire engulfed the car but there were no injuries and no structures were threatened.
