Surfers took off on a wave at Waimea Bay. A high surf warning is in effect for the north and west shores of some islands courtesy of a storm system north of Hawaii that pushed a large swell our way.

Waves of 20 to 25 feet are expected on the north shores of Oahu and Maui today after the National Weather Service issued a high surf warning that included the north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai and Molokai until 6 a.m. Thursday.

The weather service warned people to stay away from the shorelines in high surf areas because of the threat of large swells, strong currents and breaking waves that could sweep across beaches. Harbors and harbor channels also are expected to be affected.

The weather service also issued a high surf advisory for west-facing shores of Oahu with waves up to 12 to 18 feet expected. The swell is expected to peak today.

“Stay well away from the shoreline along the affected coasts,” the NWS said in a bulletin.
