A flash flood watch for the island of Kauai has been extended through late tonight.

The watch was expanded to include Niihau, while a previous flash flood warning for Kauai expired about 3:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service said the “atmosphere will remain moist and unstable across Kauai and Niihau tonight, due to a stalled front to the northwest of the state.

“Heavy showers producing flooding rains along with isolated thunderstorms will be possible,” the Weather Service said.

Weather officials said in a bulletin that the Hanalei Stream bridge was closed due to flooding. The American Red Cross opened a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School, which was closed today. Grove Farm said the access road to Mahaulepu was closed until further notice.

A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that can lead to flash flooding and residents should be prepared to take action if flash flood warnings are issued, the Weather Service said.

Kalalau Trail was also closed, as were the Kee and Haena beach lifeguard towers, until further notice.

Green waste services at all transfer stations across the island were closed today, including white goods, tires and scrap metal collections at the Hanapepe transfer station. The Kekaha landfill and HI5 redemption center were also closed until further notice due to unsafe conditions.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden canceled all tours at Limahuli, Allerton and McBryde gardens due to the heavy rainfall until further notice. The Kapaa Sunshine Market at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex was canceled today.

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, meanwhile, was working to restore power in areas of the North Shore and was directing customers to visit its Facebook page or call 246-8200 for updates.

The state Department of Health issued a brown water advisory for the island of Kauai due to heavy rains. The public was advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris.
