A 24-year-old man who was found in his yard in Puna with a gunshot wound to his head has died.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Nicholas J. Theiss of Kurtistown. An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said Theiss’ condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead Monday night.

On Oct. 29, Theiss was flown to Oahu from Hilo Medical Center in critical condition after he was found in the yard of his North Road residence in Mountain View with a gunshot wound to his head. A firearm was recovered.

Big Island police arrested a 28-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He lives at the same residence as Theiss and was released pending investigation.

Police said the fatal gunshot wound might’ve been from an accidental discharge of the firearm.
