The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the winners of the inaugural Hawaiian monk seal photo contest on its Facebook page yesterday.

Two winners were chosen from eight categories which included: Coexistence with Hawaii’s native seal, Moms and Pups, Seal-Seal Interaction, Strike a Pose, Monk Seals in their Settings, Surf and Swim, Threats to Survival, and Monument Insight.

NOAA received hundreds of submissions, narrowing them down to the eight categories. Winners were determined by the number of likes received on Facebook by members of the public.

Kaimana, the pup who became famous after her birth at Kaimana Beach over the summer, and her mom, Rocky, were the subjects of the two winning photos in the Mom and Pups category. The winning photos were by Carol Nakamoto and Raiza Gabarda.

NOAA Fisheries will feature the winning photos in a 2018 calendar. The winners are also listed on NOAA Fisheries’ website.
