Hawaii forward Amy Atwell took off on a fast break that resulted in a layup with Northern Arizona forward Khiarica Rasheed defending in the first half.

Freshman Amy Atwell scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Hawaii women’s basketball team to an 84-68 victory over Northern Arizona in the team’s home opener tonight.

Sarah Toeaina added 16 points and seven rebounds in front of a “Whiteout” crowd of 712 on the opening night of the Rainbow Wahine Bank of Hawaii Classic.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Wahine maintained a lead thanks in part to Atwell’s multiple steal-and-score sequences. UH (2-1) blew it open on NAU (0-3) late in the game.

UH faces San Diego (3-0) at 5 p.m. Sunday for the tournament title.
