LAHAINA >> A hot start did not avail Division II Chaminade in its first-round matchup with No. 13 Notre Dame in the first round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational today.

The Silverswords fell 83-56 behind the shooting prowess of Fighting Irish guard Matt Farrell (27 points) and forward Bonzie Colson (23) at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Host Chaminade hit some early 3s and was right with the Irish through the first media timeout, trailing 13-12. The Silverswords trailed by only nine at halftime when Brett Reed hit a one-footed 3-pointer, then by six to open the second half on a deep 3 by Austin Pope.

UND (4-0) responded with force, though, and the shooting went cold for Chaminade (2-1). Forward Erik Scheive led the Silverswords with 17 points.

Notre Dame faces LSU (3-0) in Tuesday’s second semifinal at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers pulled off a mild upset of two-time Maui champion Michigan, 77-75. Michigan’s loss means there will be a first-time Maui champ on Wednesday.

Earlier, No. 6 Wichita State required a huge second-half surge to get past California, 92-82.

The Shockers (3-0) trailed by as many as 18 points — including nine at halftime — but used fervent fullcourt ball pressure to get back into the game in the second half. Forward Shaquille Morris (25 points) scored several times inside as the game turned, and guard Landry Shamet added 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting.

Guard Don Coleman scored 26 of his 35 points in the first half for Cal (2-2), while freshman forward Justice Sueing — the son of the former UH player of the same name — put in a season-high 20 on 7-for-12 shooting with six rebounds.

Marquette (2-1) defeated VCU (2-2) 94-83 in the first game of the day. The Golden Eagles and Shockers meet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for a spot in the championship game.
