It was a relief to say goodbye to the derelict commercial fishing vessel Pacific Paradise — a fuel-leaking, fire-catching rusting eyesore grounded off Waikiki for two months. After multiple failed attempts, crews managed to float the boat and tow it to deeper waters, where it will be sunk.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will assess the damage left behind. And no doubt more questions will, and should, be raised about conditions faced by foreign workers on Hawaii-based commercial fishing vessels. The Pacific Paradise, owned by Honolulu-based TWOL LLC, was carrying 19 foreign workers, although it was not on a fishing trip.

Watch out for marathon-day traffic

Many of those who will run the Honolulu Marathon on Sunday have been training for a year. Even those participating alongside in the Start-to-Park 10K Run have trotted around a bit in preparation.

But Marathon Sunday requires a little planning for couch potatoes at home, too — mainly, planning to stay off East Oahu roads for the better part of the day. Check it out online (www.honolulumarathon.org/key-information/traffic-advisory). Best to steer clear of that kind of marathon.
