Christmas is coming early at the Honolulu Zoo, where visitors can watch a variety of animals open holiday gifts.

Christmas is coming early at the Honolulu Zoo, where visitors can watch a variety of animals open holiday gifts on Saturday. The celebration includes strolling musicians, educational and craft activities and an appearance by Santa Claus, all taking place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Chimpanzees will be the first to receive and “open” special enrichment gifts, such as food, treats and toys, at 9:30 a.m. Here is the remainder of the delivery schedule:

>> African ground hornbill and marabou stork, 10 a.m.

>> Orangutan, 10:20 a.m.

>> Sumatran tiger, 10:45 a.m.

>> Asian elephant, 11:15 a.m.

>> Keiki Zoo, 11:30 a.m.

>> Galapagos tortoise and Linne’s two-toed sloth, 1:15 p.m.

>> Gharial, 1:30 p.m.

>> Lovebirds and Parrot Row, 2 p.m.

The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but will be closed Dec. 25. General admission is $19 for ages 13 and older, $11 for children ages 3-12, and free for children age 2 and under. Admission for Hawaii residents and military is $8 and $4, respectively. Visit honoluluzoo.org or call 971-7171.
