It was a disappointed sigh that greeted Thursday’s headline, “Saturday service at Kapalama Hale ends this weekend.”
From October through this past weekend, akamai Oahu residents have been able take care of some city business at the satellite site on Saturdays, when it was less crowded and more relaxed. So it’s too bad those hours are ending. But as the city noted in issuing the closure reminder: the Saturday service was meant as a temporary remedy for an expected surge in license renewals. The city is encouraging those who can, to go online instead of stand in line. Many services, including motor vehicle registration renewal, state ID applications, and water bill and property tax payment, can be found at www.honolulu.gov/csd.
Fees going up, so watch your wallets
Hope you have a little extra Christmas cash still hanging around. Starting today, you may need it. Occasional bus riders will need to scrape up an extra quarter for the $2.75 charged as a one-way fare. Other folks may want to put it in the piggybank to save for heftier increases, all part of a raft of new laws. For example, they may need an extra $20 or so to pay their car registration fee. State income taxes are rising for those with higher pay, although they may do better with Uncle Sam’s tax cuts.
In other good news: Hawaii’s minimum hourly wage is now $10.10.
