Tradewinds are forecast to strengthen today and possibly reach gale force in the Alenuihaha Channel, the Pailolo Channel, Maui’s Maalaea Bay and in waters southeast of Hawaii island.
The gale watch remains in effect at least until late Thursday night, the National Weather Service said.
Northeast winds are expected to reach 23 to 35 mph, with gusts topping 50 mph, the weather service said. Seas will range from 8 to 13 feet.
A gale is defined as winds from 34 to 47 knots, or 39 to 54 mph.
For all Hawaii waters, a small-craft advisory is in effect until at least 6 a.m. Friday, the weather service said.

Affordable housing project is planned for North Kihei
Grassland in North Kihei will be transformed into affordable housing under plans for Kaiwahine Village.
The 120-unit affordable rental housing project will be built on nearly 9.3 acres mauka of the end of Kaiwahine Street and the Hale Piilani subdivision, the Maui News reports.
According to plans, the development would be built in two phases and target families with incomes at 60 percent or less of the area median income.
Phase 1 would have 64 units — 32 two-bedroom and 32 three-bedroom units (including a manager’s unit). Phase 2 would have 56 units — 32 two-bedroom and 24 three-bedroom units. Rents are proposed to range from $371 to $1,076 per month.
Site improvements include grading, paved roadways and curbs, gutters and sidewalks, according to the draft environmental impact statement.
The estimated cost of development is $53.9 million. Construction is planned to begin this year, and completion is targeted for 2020.
