The state transportation department is temporarily reducing the weight limit for the Hanapepe River Bridge on Kaumualii Highway, or Route 50, in Hanapepe Town on Kauai starting next Thursday.

Signage will be installed informing motorists of the 34-ton weight limit.

Haulers should reduce their vehicle’s carrying weight accordingly. For reference, a fire truck that is fully loaded with equipment and personnel would weigh approximately 25 tons.

A two-lane temporary bypass bridge across Hanapepe River is under construction, with anticipated completion by March 2018. This temporary bridge will not have any weight restrictions, allowing up to 44 tons, the state’s legal load. Bridge work is weather permitting.

The Hanapepe River Bridge project was developed by the Central Federal Lands Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with the state transportation department. More information on the project is available at this link.
