Visitor dies while snorkeling at Kihei beach

A 50-year-old California man has died after he was found unresponsive in waters at Kamaole Beach Park III in Kihei.

Just before 12:40 p.m. Thursday, emergency crews responded to a call of an unresponsive man pulled to shore from the ocean.

Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto of the Maui Fire Department said the visitor of Oakland was snorkeling alone before beachgoers found him floating face down in knee-deep water.

Bystanders pulled him to shore and administered CPR before lifeguards took over. Fire rescue and paramedics also responded and continued CPR to no avail.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
