A furious rally by the Hawaii women’s basketball team was not enough to salvage a victory in a 70-66 loss at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center today.

UH (8-11 overall) dropped to 1-5 in conference play, the program’s worst mark through six games as a Big West member. It got swept on its two-game road trip and also swept home-and-home by UCI (11-8, 3-2).

The Rainbow Wahine trailed by 17 points going into the fourth quarter but cut that to three with a minute left on a 3-pointer by Tia Kanoa. UH got the ball back down three in the waning seconds, but Amy Atwell was called for a traveling violation and Anteaters guard Morgan Green (27 points) sealed it at the line by making one of two.

Green scored 58 points in two games against UH a little over a week apart.

The Wahine were led in scoring by Sarah Toeaina, who had 19 on a 13-for-14 effort at the line. She also had nine rebounds and seven turnovers. Atwell contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and four turnovers. Kenna Woodfolk had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Toeaina needs 10 more points to join the UH 1,000-point club. Hawaii next plays at home against Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
