Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop in Kailua is closing Sunday after nearly 50 years in business.

A recording on the company’s business line says, “Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop after a run of 48 years will be closing for good this coming Sunday, (Jan.) 28th. We wish you all well. We hope to see you this week. Aloha.”

The bakery at 46 Hoolai St., across from Hardware Hawaii, has been a popular spot for fresh malasadas, pastries and bread.

“We’d like to take this moment to say thank you to all the loyal friends and customers we’ve made over the years. For some, we knew your parents, watched as you grew up, and have shared our traditions with your children,” according to a post on the company’s website by owner Non deMello. “We will miss you. You brought so much joy into our workplace that it was always a pleasure to serve you.”

The shop will close at 2 p.m., the post said. DeMello couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
