The National Weather Service has extended a flood advisory for Hawaii island to later tonight as rain continued to fall over the island’s windward side.

The advisory is set to expire at 8:30 p.m., but may be extended if heavy rain persists.

At 5:30 p.m., radar showed widespread, moderate rain falling over the windward side of the Big Island, with rain rates in excess of 1 inch an hour, the service said.

Locations in the advisory include Hilo, Naalehu, Paauilo, Waipio Valley, Orchidlands Estates, Kukuihaele, Hawi, Pepeekeo, Keaau, Honokaa, Ookala and Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Kua O Ka Lā Public Charter school in Pāhoa will be closed tomorrow due to the bad weather. According to the School Director Susie Osborne, there is major flooding on campus.

The service warned of possible ponding on roads, especially in Hilo, and rising streams.
