Agnes’ Bake Shop ending run after nearly 50 years

Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop in Kailua is closing Sunday after nearly 50 years in business.

The bakery “after a run of 48 years will be closing for good this coming Sunday. We wish you all well. We hope to see you this week. Aloha,” said a recording on the company’s business line Monday.

The shop at 46 Hoolai St. across from Hardware Hawaii, a popular spot for fresh malasadas, pastries and bread, did not say why it is shutting down. Owner Non deMello couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

“We’d like to take this moment to say thank you to all the loyal friends and customers we’ve made over the years. For some, we knew your parents, watched as you grew up, and have shared our traditions with your children,” wrote deMello in a post on the company’s website. “We will miss you. You brought so much joy into our workplace that it was always a pleasure to serve you.”

The shop will close at 2 p.m. Sunday, the post said.

Agnes’ has a loyal following.

Ghazaleh Moayedi’s family have been loyal customers since moving to Kailua a year and a half ago, she told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

“They have the best malasadas, and we always get them whenever we have guests in town,” she said. “I will really miss the bakery and have no idea where I’ll get excellent, fresh malasadas in Kailua. We might have to drive into town!”
