Police release driver in fatal hit-and-run on Maui

A 25-year-old Kihei man has turned himself in to police in connection with a fatal hit-and run that occurred at a McDonald’s parking lot on Maui.

Police said the suspect turned himself in at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and was arrested on suspicion of accidents involving death or serious bodily injury.

He was released pending further investigation.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said a Honda Civic sedan struck a pedestrian at the fast-food restaurant parking lot located at 1214 South Kihei Road.

The pedestrian, who was identified as Robert Mercier, 57, of no local address, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 25-year-old man suspected of driving the sedan at the time of the crash fled the scene on foot with his passengers.

About four hours later, the driver turned himself in to police.
