Beachgoers looking to cool off should keep in mind that a high surf advisory for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and north-facing shores of Maui, remains in effect through 6 p.m. Friday.
A large northwest swell is spreading southeast through the coastal waters, according to the National Weather Service, which will produce hazardous surf of 15 to 20 feet along the north and west shores of the smaller islands through Friday. As the swell subsides, another northwest swell is expected, leading to a possible extension of the surf advisory.
Forecasters say a ridge of high pressure remains to the south of the state through the weekend, keeping a moist Kona wind pattern in place.
There is an increased chance of rain across the smaller islands tonight and Friday. A strong, cold front is expected to bring increasing showers and the potential for thunderstorms to Kauai late Saturday night, with the activity then spreading slowly down the island chain over Super Bowl Sunday through Monday night.
