Man apparently drowns at South Point Landing

A man in his 20s apparently drowned while swimming with a woman at South Point Landing, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

Fire units responded to a 1:59 p.m. report of two swimmers in distress who were swimming in about 50 feet of water. Fire personnel arrived on scene at 2:28 p.m.

The woman, also in her 20s, made it to shore on her own, receiving minor scrapes to her legs.

A boater helped guide fire personnel to the location of the male swimmer. Fire free divers recovered the man’s body.
