Winds buffet coasts, summits of Big Isle

The coasts and summits of Hawaii island are being buffeted by strong winds today.

Weather officials have issued a wind advisory for the coastal areas and a high wind warning for summits of the island, and are in effect from through midnight.

Strong north winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour and localized gusts more than 45 miles per hour are expected to build in over the Hawaii island as an upper-level trough heads east and an upper ridge moves in from the west, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition, breezy north winds along a surface front crossing the islands are expected to bring advisory conditions to the low elevations of the island.

Motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution.
