Firefighters rescue man who fell into sewage pit

Firefighters assisted a 39-year-old man who fell roughly 12 to 15 feet into a pit at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Tuesday afternoon.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded at 10:51 a.m. with four units, with the first unit arriving at 10:59 a.m.

The contractor had fallen about 12 to 15 feet from a ladder into a pit, which contained a small amount of sewage. Fire personnel contacted the man at 11:25 a.m.

The man received injuries to his lower back.

He was stabilized and extricated from the pit before being transferred to Emergency Medical Services personnel.
