NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A series of radar images through 12:15 p.m. today shows an upper-level disturbance west of Hawaii island.

A high surf advisory is in effect for the north and west shores of Kauai County until 6 p.m. today.

An elevated northwest swell is expected to bring 12- to 18-foot surf to the north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau this morning, easing off this afternoon, according to weather officials. Impacts include strong, breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.

A flash flood watch is also in effect for all islands from this evening through Friday afternoon due to abundant moisture that will combine with a disturbance west of the area that will lead to widespread heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Travel to Hawaii island summits is discouraged, with a high wind advisory in effect for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa above 12,000 feet until 6 p.m. this evening, and heavy snow up to 6 inches or more possible from this evening through Friday afternoon. A flash flood watch is also in for Hawaii island from this evening through Friday afternoon.

While dry weather is expected today, the National Weather Service said showers are in store for Hawaii island this afternoon, with wet weather increasing tonight and persisting through the end of the week. A nearby, upper-level disturbance also brings the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms this weekend.
