Warriors win Big West volleyball opener

    UC Irvine’s Joel Schneidmiller was blocked by Hawaii setter Joe Worsley and middle blocker Patrick Gasman in the first set.

Junior hitter Stijn van Tilburg and sophomore opposite Rado Parapunov each put down 21 kills as No. 3 Hawaii turned back No. 5 UC Irvine 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16 in tonight’s Big West men’s volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore middle Patrick Gasman added 10 kills and junior setter Joe Worsley had a career-high four service aces for the Rainbow Warriors (9-1, 1-0 BWC), who won their 14th consecutive home conference match.

Aaron Koubi had 17 kills to lead the Anteaters (10-4, 0-1), who fell to the Warriors for the fifth straight time.

The teams meet again at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
