Lost and injured hikers keep firefighters busy

Honolulu Fire Department personnel spent a busy Saturday responding to reports of hikers lost or injured on trails.

HFD units were dispatched at 10:24 a.m. to locate two female hikers who were lost and unable to manage steep terrain on the Hahaione Trail in Hawaii Kai. Firefighters made their way up the trail on foot and safely escorted the pair out.

Shortly after noon, HFD units responded to an injured hiker who fell 30 feet on the Kuaokala Trail in Hauula. The 23-year-old hiker was airlifted to a landing zone at Dillingham Airfield and transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local trauma center in serious condition.

At 3:46 p.m. HFD units assisted a female hiker out of the Lulumahu Falls Trail in Nuuanu. Then at 4:08 p.m. came a report of three hikers and two dogs trapped by rising streams at Kaipapau Gulch Trail in Hauula. Firefighters established a rope-rescue system to get the group safely through several crossings and off the trail.

Also on Saturday, HFD personnel assisted a man who experienced an unspecified medical condition on a trail near the Kahuku Motocross Track. Firefighters responding to the 9:46 a.m. call hiked to the remote location and carried the man out. He was transferred to the care of EMS.
