A high surf advisory is in effect for the east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island until 6 a.m. Friday.

A large, short-period east swell combined with strengthening tradewinds will maintain elevated rough surf along east-facing shores this week, according to the National Weather Service. Surf along east-facing shores is expected to reach 8 to 11 feet today, and 9 to 13 feet on Wednesday.

Expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous. The long duration of this large surf, combined with strong onshore winds and large astronomical tides, could result in coastal inundation along some vulnerable low lying sections of east-facing shorelines, weather officials said.

Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution. If in doubt, do not go out.

In addition, a wind advisory remains in effect on the windward side of Hawaii island from Laupahoehoe northwards around Upolu Point, and over the Kohala mountains, as well as around South Point in the Kau District and over Molokai, Maui and Kahoolawe, until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Strong easterly winds of 20 to 35 miles per hour, with localized gusts over 50 miles per hour, with the strongest winds over and downslope of higher terrain and through passes, are expected in those areas.

Winds this strong can make driving difficult, knock down tree branches and cause power outages. Motorists are urged to use extra caution when driving, as well as when opening and closing doors. Also, the public is advised to avoid hiking in forests and to be prepared for power outages.

For boaters, a gale warning, with gale-force winds over portions of coastal waters, also remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

Forecasters say gusty trades will hold through the upcoming weekend. Cloudy skies will likely remain in place across the western end of the state through midweek, while showers will continue mostly over the windward side, mostly overnight and in the early morning.
