UH softball earns first Big West win

Hawaii senior Dana Thomsen held Cal Poly to four singles in a complete-game performance and the Rainbow Wahine softball team picked up its first Big West win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the Mustangs in Friday’s series opener at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Thomsen (10-10) retired the first 10 batters she faced and finished with four strikeouts and no walks in her third shutout of the season — UH’s sixth as a team — as the Wahine (17-16, 1-3 Big West) snapped a four-game losing streak.

UH right fielder Chardonnay Pantastico drove in the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning when the sophomore lined a two-out double into the right-center gap to score pinch runner Courtney Hiruko from second.

Cal Poly (17-16, 1-3) put two runners on with one out in the sixth. But Thomsen escaped with a flyout to right and a grounder to second and outdueled Lindsey Chalmers (12-6), who limited the UH offense to four hits and an intentional walk.

The series is scheduled to conclude today with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at RWSS.

Wahine headed to Molokai

The Hawaii women’s volleyball team heads to Molokai for the first time in program history, holding two clinics and its Green-White scrimmage next week at Molokai High.

Friday’s clinics are at 5 and 7 p.m., and open to students currently in grades 4-12. Pre-registration is required at either Molokai High, Molokai Gym or the Molokai Texaco.

The Rainbow Wahine’s intrasquad scrimmage begins at noon. Doors open at 11 a.m. to allow spectators to watch warm-ups.

Hawaii returns All-Big West selections McKenna Granato and Norene Iosia. Also competing are graduating seniors Savanah Kahakai, Kendra Koelsch and Clare-Marie Anderson, who grew up on Molokai.

Hawaii had planned a similar event in Molokai for October 2014, but it was canceled due to Hurricane Ana.
