Lane closures are scheduled for the westbound H-1 freeway between the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp (Exit 10) and the H-1/H-2 split over four consecutive weekends, for micropile installations, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The weekend lane closures are scheduled as follows:
>> From 9 p.m. April 20 through noon April 21: Three right lanes will be closed for concrete pours.
>> From noon April 21 through 6 p.m. April 21: Two right lanes will be closed as the concrete cures.
>> From 6 p.m. April 21 through 11:59 p.m. April 22: Three right lanes will be closed for pavement restoration and cleanup.
>> To be repeated on the weekends starting Friday, April 27; and Friday, May 4.
The micropiles are being installed to support the drain boxes and covers in the right travel lane, giving them the additional needed support to sustain the weight of vehicle loads. Their installation requires the use of large equipment, including cranes, drill rigs and concrete mixers.
Special-duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control, and electronic message boards will be posted to warn motorists of the closures. Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time during the construction.

Man allegedly harasses boy, 9, at UH Maui
Maui police are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly harassed a 9-year-old boy Thursday at the University of Hawaii-Maui College campus.
According to a University of Hawaii email alert, the boy fell while playing in a grassy area between the Ka Lama and Noii buildings. The suspect then allegedly placed one of his feet on the boy’s chest and stated, “You’re about to know me.”
The suspect then fled the area. He is described as Caucasian, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with white hair and wearing a black T-shirt and shorts.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call UHMC campus security at 984-3255.

Firefighters douse 2 fires in Pahoa homes
Big Isle firefighters extinguished a fire at a single-family home in Pahoa early Thursday, the second blaze at an unoccupied residence in the area within eight hours.
The first fire occurred at a three-bedroom home in the Tiki Gardens Subdivision on King Kamehameha Boulevard at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Arriving firefighters observed the residence and a four-door sedan parked in the carport engulfed in flames, according to a Hawaii Fire Department news release. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 5:33 p.m. and extinguished it by 6:45 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $90,000.
The second residential fire occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday at 15-2755 Opihi St. When firefighters arrived they observed flames in the kitchen, garage and a pickup truck. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 1:05 a.m. and extinguished it 10 minutes later.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
No injuries were reported in either fire.
