From ‘trash’ tree to treasure

    University of Hawaii architecture graduate Joey Valenti — with help from Christine Johnson — worked earlier this month on the framework for the home he designed out of albizia on the University of Hawaii campus. The bulk of the logs used to build the home came from Schofield Barracks and near the H-2 freeway, with some from a Waimanalo nursery.

    Volunteers earlier this month erected the last of the 13 arches that provide the frame for the home.

    Joey Valenti, pictured, and Jerome Casica, shop assistant at Bello’s Millwork, clamped albizia boards together on a large jig to make a panel last month. Three panels were then laminated together for strength.

    Joey Valenti is an UH School of Architecture graduate and won the $10,000 UH President’s Green Project Implementation Award that aims to create a self-described alternative framework for construction and housing as demonstrated through his first scale model home.
