A 41-year-old meet record was broken at Saturday’s OIA track and field championships at Mililani.
A drought of similar tenure ended as well for the Leilehua girls.
Kaiser’s Aaron Rivas won the boys 400-meter run in 48.99 seconds, edging past the record of 49.2 set by James Smith in 1977. It was one of two records set at the meet.
The Leilehua girls scored 99 points to win their first team title since 1979. Leilehua’s Harley Frye captured the 100-meter dash in 12.97 and Jordan Schmidt won the 400 in 59.00. Frye and Schmidt ran on the winning 4×100 relay team with Kimberly Owens and Aiyana Fujiyama.
The Mules won three straight girls team titles from 1977 to 1979. Mililani was second with 70 points and Kaiser was third with 60.50.
Aiea senior Leslie Mamai-Lagafuaina won the girls discus (116 feet, 11 inches) and shot put (42-4 1/2).
Kalani had three event winners in Cameron Woods (100 hurdles), Azure Chung (long jump) and Sheree Tam (triple jump). Kaiser also had three winners in Hannah Hollenbeck (300 hurdles), Juliette Lum (pole vault) and Derya Hanusz (800). Moanalua’s Carly Dailey took home the 1,500 and teammate Brooklyn Allen won the 3,000. Mililani’s Mackenzie Reed won the 200 and was a member of the championship 4×400 relay squad. Radford’s Angela Howell won the high jump.
The Leilehua boys scored 81 points to win their first team title. Mililani was second with 51 and Radford had 48.
Jacob Schmidt doubled up with victories in the 100 (10.90) and 200 (22.48) for Leilehua and Dorian Furtado won the 110 hurdles (15.72). Furtado and Schmidt ran on the winning 4×100 relay team with James McGary and Kesean James. Braxton Victor won the discus (145-2).
Kalaheo senior Colby Otero set the meet’s other record with a time of 4:03.47 in the boys 1,500 run. Otero broke the record of 4:03.73 set by Bryce Jenkins of Leilehua in 2009. Otero later won the 3,000 run in 9:06.76.
Kapolei’s Easton Phillips won the high jump and teammate Samuel Wren won the 800. Radford’s Michael Edwards won the 300 hurdles and ran on the winning 4×400 relay team. Other boys champions were Farrington’s Kaimana Gahan (pole vault), Aiea’s Ferenise Lualemana (shot put), Moanalua’s Rashod Tanner (long jump) and Waipahu’s Isaiah Harris (triple jump).
The Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championships are set for Friday and Saturday at Kamehameha.
