Bronson Nakaahiki, 32, was charged with taking an endangered species after the Kekaha resident allegedly killed a threatened Hawaiian green sea turtle on Kauai.

A 32-year-old Kekaha man has been charged after he allegedly killed a threatened Hawaiian green sea turtle on Kauai.

Bronson Nakaahiki was charged with taking an endangered species.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources reported that witnesses called 911 Wednesday after they observed Nakaahiki allegedly slice the turtle’s throat and harvest meat from it on Kekaha Beach.

This is the second time a green sea turtle has been killed in Hawaii within the last week. On Saturday, a 250-pound turtle was discovered dead at Onekahakaha County Beach Park in South Hilo.

Witnesses spotted the turtle floating belly up with its two front flippers amputated.

It is illegal to harm or kill a green sea turtle which is listed as a threatened species under federal and state law.

Anyone with information on the killing of the turtle in South Hilo is urged to call the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement at 643-DLNR.
