It’s a kinder, gentler lion that peers off of packages of Lion Coffee, now that the company has redesigned its logo.
The blue-eyed beastie that now carries the Lion brand wears a haku lei around his head and slight smile. The old Mr. Lion had a sterner countenance.
The redesign is the company’s first in its 40 years in business. It debuted earlier this month throughout the coffee line.
PIZZA MEETS MALASADA
New at Flour & Barley are malasadas made with fried pizza dough, crusted with li hing-flavored sugar and topped with diced pineapple and vanilla gelato.
The $9 dessert is part of a new spring menu that includes seasonal pizzas, sandwiches and entrees, such as a chicken bruschetta pizza with sun-dried tomato pesto and a 10-ounce flatiron steak with spring vegetables.

A MILITARY SALUTE
Armed Forces Day is Saturday, but BLT Steak and BLT Market are marking the date on Sunday and Monday with a 35 percent-off deal for active and retired military personnel.

COCKTAIL PARTY BENEFIT
Sip, savor and support Aloha Harvest at a cocktail party Thursday thrown by Ad 2 Honolulu.
The Sip & Savor event, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Artistry Honolulu, 461 Cooke St., will feature dishes by chefs Robert Paik of the Honolulu Museum of Art, Jason Takemura of Bamboo Catering and Curtis Chung of El Chino Loco food truck, with wine and cocktails.
Ad 2 Honolulu is a trade group for advertising professionals age 32 and younger. Each year the group produces a public-serving marketing campaign on behalf of a select charity. This year’s is for Aloha Harvest, a group that collects food for social service agencies.
That campaign, “Waste Less, Feed More,” will be introduced at this week’s party, which also will include a silent auction and music by Kala‘e Camarillo.

LIGHT BITES FOR SUMMER
This month’s Eat Well for Life cooking demonstration at Adventist Health Castle is dubbed “Perfect Summer Pupus.”
Hannah Vernon, owner of Homecooked with Love, a meal delivery and catering service, will demonstrate simple dishes that are free of gluten, dairy and refined sugar.
The class runs from 6 to 7:15 p.m. May 24 in Castle’s Wellness Auditorium. Cost is $12, which includes samples and recipes.

ROY’S TOUR CONTINUES
The Turtle Bay Foundation will be the beneficiary of the next event marking chef Roy Yamaguchi’s 30th year in Hawaii.
The yearlong celebration is traveling through nine restaurants in the Yamaguchi chain.
On Saturday, the party moves to Roy’s Beach House at the Turtle Bay Resort with a beachfront lunch showcasing farmers, ranchers and other local producers. Beach House Social is set for 11:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $75, $40 for ages 13 to 20, free for younger children.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the foundation, which oversees resort contributions to Oahu charities that provide environmental, educational and cultural opportunities on the North Shore.
