The University of Hawaii has been awarded a $119,821 grant to study the ongoing Kilauea eruption on Hawaii island.
Funding for the project — RAPID: Tracking Magmatic and Volcanic Changes in the May 2018 Kilauea Eruption — is provided by the National Science Foundation’s Rapid Research Response program and supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The project seeks to explain why the current volcanic activity is happening and help predict future volcanic activity.
The UH study will assess the location and movement of magma beneath the lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea to provide insight into the processes leading up to the fissures and eruption activity. Researchers also will incorporate data collected by HVO, including samples of lava taken throughout the event, to help better understand volcanic processes and activities in volcanic rift zones.
East Manoa Road to close Thursday for pole removal
The mauka-bound lane of East Manoa Road between Koaniani Way and Keama Place will be closed 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday while Hawaiian Electric Co. crews remove a utility pole in the vicinity.
Traffic will be contra-flowed onto the makai-bound traffic lane, and police officers will be there to help redirect motorists. The sidewalk will also be closed to pedestrians during that period.
