1,900-gallon Kahului wastewater overflow contained

A wastewater overflow of about 1,944 gallons which occurred Thursday on Maalo Street in Kahului has been contained, according to Maui County.

The county’s Department of Environmental Management said the overflow was caused by a blockage of grit and pieces of PVC pipe in the main line. It was originally reported at 8:45 p.m. and stopped by 10:30 p.m.

The wastewater flowed along Maalo Street and ended in a French drain, but did not reach the ocean. All spill waters were removed, and all affected areas disinfected. Maui County said the state Health Department has also been notified.
