Suspect sought in Big Island shooting

Hawaii island police today were still looking for the person responsible for a shooting Saturday in the Honaunau area that left one man dead and two others injured.

The incident was reported at 2:58 p.m. in the area of 84-5240 Painted Church Road.

According to a Hawaii County Fire Department report, the unidentified shooter fled the scene on a motorcycle.

One of the victims, a 39-year-old man, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was en route to Kona Community Hospital in a private vehicle driven by a family member when the driver made contact with a responding HCFD medic unit, which then assumed care and transport.

Another unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene. No details were provided about the third victim.

Police established a staging area on Keala O Keawe Road during the initial response and investigation.
