Honolulu firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that burned a single-family home Saturday night in Kalihi.

Before the fire started, squatters were in the abandoned one-story structure, but they left before the fire started, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant. It was unknown how long the structure had been abandoned.

About 40 firefighters responded to the blaze at 2008 Wilcox St. at about 9:35 p.m. and found the structure engulfed in smoke and flames, Seguirant said.

The fire was extinguished shortly before 11 p.m.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.
