The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a snorkeler today near Molokini Crater off Maui after the man complained of pain in his arms.

The 69-year-old who headed out aboard the 53-foot Lani Kai began experiencing pain while snorkeling near the crater, according to the Coast Guard, which arrived at the scene with a paramedic.

Both the paramedic and a Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended the man be taken to a hospital. The patient was brought to shore aboard a Coast Guard Response Boat-Medium, where awaiting emergency personnel transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

“We work closely with our emergency service partners to get visitors and waterway users to a higher level of medical care as quickly as possible,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Grant Hadley in a news release.

At the time of the rescue, there were two-foot waves, with light and variable winds.
