In May 1942, intelligence experts at the Combat Intelligence Unit at Pearl Harbor, known as Station HYPO, intercepted hundreds of Japanese messages per day and deciphered about 25 percent of their contents. The messages provided information warningof an impending attack on Midway Island and enabling a U.S. ambush of the Japanese strike group. The Battle of Midway, fought June 4-7, 1942, was widely considered the turning point of World War II in the Pacific.
