Letter: Sunset Beach fixes no more than a farce

The headline of the article “A model for the future?” (Star-Advertiser, Aug. 16) should have included several more question marks.

Apparently, the city’s plan to restore and mitigate one of the world’s most famous beaches from “severe” winter “erosion” and “climate change” is to push some sand around; use volunteers to plant some “coastal plants”; then “reinforce” it with a path, fence and signs.

Oddly, while this plan is sold as a fix for severe winter erosion and climate change, the planners admit “the surf will take the sand away as it has in years past.”

Almost as a punch line to an absurd joke, the planners say that the project will “mitigate foot erosion” — the sand that sticks to people’s skin when they go to the car or shower at home.

If the article is an accurate report, then the city’s response to the forces of nature is a farce.
