The second-ranked U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three players with Hawaii ties in the starting lineup, rallied past Serbia 15-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10, in Wednesday’s opening pool-play match of the FIVB World Championship in Bari, Italy.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) was in on three blocks and middle Taylor Averill (University of Hawaii) had four kills, a block and an ace. Erik Shoji (Punahou) played the entire match at libero and his older brother Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) was a serving substitute in Sets 2 and 4.
The U.S. (1-0) continues pool play today against Australia (0-1) which was swept by Russia in Wednesday’s opener.
