I am shocked by the hubris of those who claim that the anonymous author of a New York Times commentary critical of President Donald Trump is serving and benefiting the American people (“Who benefits from White House op-ed?” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Sept. 12).

It was President Barack Obama who observed that “elections have consequences,” and that those who want to get things done should “go out there and win an election.”

Our American democratic system is founded on open robust debate of political differences followed by an election, in which voters decide who will be in charge, even though almost half of the voters disagree.

Any person in government who secretly works to thwart or undermine a duly elected official is guilty of subversion and perhaps treason. True heroes are whistleblowers who openly reveal government wrongdoing.
